“England is quite a sight, I must admit. Full of scenery and historical buildings,” He replied. “I enjoy leaving the country when I need to be left alone— therefore I own a flat over there. As well as in a few other countries as well.”

He took another sip of his drink after replying, leaving out the parts of just exactly WHY he traveled to different countries so often.

She smiled and nodded in agreement.

“It’s great that you can live practically wherever you want. Most people dream of that type of freedom.” She took a sip of whisky. “I’ve always wanted to see more of the world, but not at the moment. I’m happy with where I am now, but I want to go back home some time this year.” She didn’t even notice it, but the silence around them made her realise that they were now the only ones in the entire bar. But this didn’t matter to her, she was happy in the company she had. “So how about your home? Is it safe to assume you’re American?”

“I have,” He countered. “Several times, in fact. Just as I’ve traveled other various parts of the world. What good is a world full of cultures and scenery for you to travel if you don’t explore?” He drawled, not really as a question, but a statement.

A bartender came by with his drink as well, and he sipped it lightly. This encounter made a good excuse for him to get to know this girl, as far as weaknesses went he wasn’t aware of anything useful, but he’d keep prying for things anyway to see how much he could get to know.

“I see, and what did you think of my lovely little country?” She asked. “It’s just that…” she pinched her brow “…a lot of people I’ve met here crack jokes about tea and our articulate language.” She laughed. It was so refreshing to talk to someone with more refined sensibilities.

“Observant. I enjoy observant people,” He managed to purr slightly. It was true, too. Observant people learned more. When she offered him a drink, he accepted, and then brought up a different topic. “You’re from England, did you say?”

Penelope nodded and took her drink from the bartender.

“Born and raised, it’s a lovely place to grow up in.” She said. Her heart lifted at fond memories of Her Majesty’s home. “The constant rain makes everything so lush and green, very picturesque.” Oh she missed it terribly, but she wasn’t going to let this fleeting thought drag her into a gloomy slump. “Have you been there yourself?”

The choice of song almost made Slade chuckle. It was the type of thing he would say to someone, if he were that type of a person. When the girl returned next to him, perhaps a seat or two more closer than she had been before, and spoke to him once more- he smirked.

“Not at all. I wasn’t aware that I gave off that thought to those around me, but you are right.”

Her smile grew at this and she chuckled a little, rubbing her thumb absent-mindedly against the glass, the condensation slipping on her fingernails.

“I have an eye for those sort of things, looking beneath the mask and all those kinds of cliches.” She sipped her drink, thinking about what she just said… masks… that felt so odd to say, to this man in particular. T-There was no way that he was… Slade

Clearing her throat she brushed her hair to one side, it was getting a little frizzy from the rain. She re-gained her composure and finished her drink, ordering another glass of whisky. Penelope bit her lip subtly and turned to the man.

“Would you like one? It’s a very good drop.” She asked, being polite, not seductive.

England, did she say? His expression turned thoughtful as she went to place a quarter in the jukebox on the other end of the room. That would explain the accent, yes. He wondered just how long it was that she’d been here. It couldn’t have been all her life, seeing as the accent remained strong.

He finished off his second glass, and waited a moment before ordering another. It was, in a percentage, 90% impossible for him to get drunk, due to his healing abilities ridding of any alcohol in his system the minute it entered. So when it came to drinking he was almost never careful, that is unless the person was suspected of spiking the drink in heavy poisoning, which was rare in a regular quiet bar.

Penelope grinned as she found what she was looking for: Julie London, Cry Me a River. Putting on the song, she walked back to the bar and chose to sit a little closer to the man she was talking to before, realising she didn’t get his name. However, there was a strong instinct to keep this moment nameless.

“I don’t mean to sound abrupt, but you look like you’ve got a lifetime of interesting stories to tell.” She smiled at him, her green eyes clearing of tears as the alcohol lifted her spirits. “Unless you’re a gentleman that prefers to keep his secrets.”

“Why not? It is a good night after all,” Slade took another sip of his drink. “I do enjoy a nice downpour from time to time.”

Again, with the questioning, he didn’t feel the need to explain himself further than he did. It could cause too much suspicion, and for him, that wasn’t a risk he was willing to take.

“Likewise, all this rain reminds me of England.” She smiled and looked away for a second, musing on her memories of the London weather and the constant, pouring rain she loved. Leaving her half-finished drink on the counter, she got off her seat and found a quarter in her pocket. “Excuse me.” She wandered over to the juke box, slipping the coin in and looking for the song she wanted.

The silence of the bar was starting to get awkward, but she was glad that there was one person she worth talking to. However, there was a feeling she couldn’t shake. There was something about him that was frightening and cold, but why did she like talking to him? Perhaps it was the crippling loneliness of only having a dog for company…

“Most emotions cannot be stopped,” He replied after a moment. “I have yet to see what it is you’re apologizing for.”

His drink arrived as he said this, and he took a long sip of it. Slade, as much as he had encountered this girl, had never seen this side of her. She seemed as weak and emotional as any other person, but of course— most people that seemed emotionless were.

Penelope’s smile grew and she turned towards him a little more, so she wasn’t just talking from her side. She brushed some hair out of her face now that it had dried a little and took another sip of her drink.

“So what brings you here? Since you seem to be the happier of the two of us.” She asked.

To say that it was pouring would be a severe understatement. There was no flashes of lightning,…

The man glanced back at her when she spoke up, and then ordered a new drink by a nearby bartender. “Quite the opposite,” He smirked, not wanting to reveal much else about why he was there.

He didn’t know if he was recognized in this civil wear, but if she did recognize him he wouldn’t be surprised. There weren’t many one-eyed men in Jump that roamed around at such a late hour.

“And what brings you here?”

Her hand tightened around her glass, shrugging a little at his question.

“Just a really bad day…” She said sadly. “It was the last thing I needed in a month where so many things have gone wrong.” A tear slipped from her eye and she wiped it away quickly. “Sorry. The last thing you probably want to see is some little-miss-nobody getting teary.” She smiled at him and took a sip of her drink.
