I have had the great fortune of being free from bad dreams for the past month or so, but it seems that my mind is conspiring against me. After weeks of pleasant sleep, I have not had a dream such as this before:

The man with the red eyes was there again, and I cannot recall where I was. All I knew was that I was not safe. I can barely remember this dream; all that I remember was the blood. This is not uncommon, as blood is always in the forefront of my consciousness. I was naked and walking through a white plane, there were no features to depict a ceiling or walls, so all I remember was the coldness under my feet and the blood that wasdrippingleaking from my hair. It was as though my hair was a liquid, and my eyes were drawn to the red-eyed figure ahead of me. He too was a naked as myself, and his hair was black and fell across his body.

Suddenly spiders and blood started to pour from his fanged mouth, his black hair flying across the white void towards me as he snarled at me and I tried to flee. I took a step back only to hit something behind me; I was tied down against a block of metal, like an operating table. The white light blinded me but I could see a face in front of me, all I remember was a shade of orange so there’s no second guessing his identity. He reached out for me, but with this I awoke suddenly, a good hour before my alarm.

I fear that sometimes I am getting a little to over my head. I confess that my recent experiences with Slade have shaken me at times,more so that I actually enjoyed the brief moments that I have spent with him. But enough of this stupidity. This isn’t a bloody journal kept by a sixteen year old girl!! All I know that the red-eyed man continues to appear in my dreams, and I need to find out who the hell he is and why he has infected my nightmares.

Penelope started her car and drove off into the night. Even after more than three glasses of whisky, her head was still clear. She smiled with relief as she got to her apartment and parked in the garage. Tucking her leather briefcase under her arm, she walked to the elevator and took it to her floor.

The second she walked through her door, she was met with a deep bark.

“Hello sweetie…” She said, dropping to her knees and giving Valentine a deep scratch behind the ears and neck. His deep blue eyes narrowed at her as he sniffed her. A low, deep growl radiated through him and he snarled at her. “Easy boy. I met someone tonight-” Penelope smiled and looked into his eyes. “Remember this scent, if someone comes here and smells like that.” She snapped her teeth, Valentine licked her cheek and she straightened up. With a stomach full of whisky and a pleasant mind, she slept well that night. Valentine curled up on the end of her bed protectively.

“Doctor,” She said with a soft, secret smile. “And likewise, it was a pleasure to meet you too.” Paying the bartender, as well as leaving a nice tip, she rummaged in her bag for her car keys. The rain wasn’t as bad as it was a few hours ago, but it was still pretty strong.

“To each his own.” She said, her smile twitching as she saw a tension in his hands on the topic of his family. As he looked at the empty bar, Penelope caught the other half of his face. A patch concealed his other eye, all he was missing was the orange and black mask.

Penelope’s face kept the same comfortable smile, but her stomach felt like it was full of spiders and scorpions. She knew that there had been something in that purring voice, like a panther holding all the cards. Slade. S-She was chatting to the man who no doubt wanted to break every bone in her body, burn the remains, only to clone her, and kill all her clones. He knew who she was.

Then why the hell was she having such a great time? In this place, with these civilian faces, she was genuinely enjoying his company. Penelope took another sip of her drink and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, a nervous habit. Resting her cheek on her palm, she swirled the remaining fluids in her glass, then back up at ~~the man~~ Slade with a smile.

“Do you travel a lot as a part of your job? Or is it pleasure, rather than business?”

She smiled and nodded in agreement.

“It’s great that you can live practically wherever you want. Most people dream of that type of freedom.” She took a sip of whisky. “I’ve always wanted to see more of the world, but not at the moment. I’m happy with where I am now, but I want to go back home some time this year.” She didn’t even notice it, but the silence around them made her realise that they were now the only ones in the entire bar. But this didn’t matter to her, she was happy in the company she had. “So how about your home? Is it safe to assume you’re American?”

Her heart lifted at fond memories of Her Majesty’s home. “The constant rain makes everything so lush and green, very picturesque.” Oh she missed it terribly, but she wasn’t going to let this fleeting thought drag her into a gloomy slump. “Have you been there yourself?”

Clearing her throat she brushed her hair to one side, it was getting a little frizzy from the rain. She re-gained her composure and finished her drink, ordering another glass of whisky. Penelope bit her lip subtly and turned to the man.

“Would you like one? It’s a very good drop.” She asked, being polite, not seductive.

Putting on the song, she walked back to the bar and chose to sit a little closer to the man she was talking to before, realising she didn’t get his name. However, there was a strong instinct to keep this moment nameless.

“I don’t mean to sound abrupt, but you look like you’ve got a lifetime of interesting stories to tell.” She smiled at him, her green eyes clearing of tears as the alcohol lifted her spirits. “Unless you’re a gentleman that prefers to keep his secrets.”

“Likewise, all this rain reminds me of England.” She smiled and looked away for a second, musing on her memories of the London weather and the constant, pouring rain she loved. Leaving her half-finished drink on the counter, she got off her seat and found a quarter in her pocket. “Excuse me.” She wandered over to the juke box, slipping the coin in and looking for the song she wanted.

The silence of the bar was starting to get awkward, but she was glad that there was one person she worth talking to. However, there was a feeling she couldn’t shake. There was something about him that was frightening and cold, but why did she like talking to him? Perhaps it was the crippling loneliness of only having a dog for company…

“Just a really bad day…” She said sadly. “It was the last thing I needed in a month where so many things have gone wrong.” A tear slipped from her eye and she wiped it away quickly. “Sorry.
